Rainy Amdsterdam

(The Dutch National Opera and Ballet)

We spent a few nights in Amsterdam recently and we both were pleasantly surprised since by all accounts it should've been a terrible trip! We were stranded at our accommodation when our host disappeared for several hours. We stood in the icy, heavy rain getting more and more cranky and depressed. As we made our way from the airport to the house we saw how the weather was cold and grey... and the city itself began to look like an enormous grey landscape. But, and it's a big 'but', we discovered Amsterdam is filled with architecturally fascinating buildings, wonderful street food and half nude woman in windows. I can only guess those women were half nude since Eire was covering my eyes for the entire time we spent walking through the Red Light District. While we only spent a few days there, we do have these three recommendations for visitors to Amsterdam:

  • The Dutch National Opera and Ballet on Tuesdays holds a free lunchtime concert that we attended and immensely enjoyed. While neither of us are huge opera fans, we really enjoyed the culture and atmosphere presented in this unique building too.

  • Eat 'patats'/ 'frites' with oorlog sauce, a sauce comprising of peanut sauce, mayo and onions. Ask for extra onions! These fries come in a paper cone and are usually sold from hole-in-the-wall establishments, a popular type of Dutch fast-food. It's funny because when we asked a few of the locals what Dutch food is and what we should try, we received only vacant, confused stares. It turns out Dutch people don't have as high an opinion of their own cuisine as the French (although no-one has as high an opinion of their own food as the French...).

  • Brouwerij 't IJ is a craft brewery adjacent to a massive traditional windmill in the east of Amsterdam. I could recommend this place for the quality of the beer they produce alone, never mind the fact that you're standing below one of the very few wooden windmills left in the city! The staff are incredibly friendly too and never seem annoyed by being asked the same question over and over again, “how do you pronounce the name of Brou-wer- fijdsnv-dfs?”
