[네덜란드] 북한식당 해당화 / Haedongwha, North Korean restaurant in Amsterdam

암스테르담에 머무는 동안 해당화라고하는 유럽에서 처음 문을 연 북한식당에 다녀왔는데요. 처음으로 북한음식을 먹어보고 북한 사람들과 이야기를 나누어본 색다른 경험이었어요.

한국음식과 비교해서 가장 눈에 띄게 다른점은 ‘좀 더 달다’라는 느낌이었는데요. 음.. 그점을 제외하면 뭐 그냥 보통이나 좋았다 정도라고 말할 수 있겠네요.  평양에서 직수입된 소주는 한국에서 먹었던 소주와 비교하면 훨씬 맛이 좋았는데요. 특히 항상 페인트 제거제 같은 맛때문에 소주 먹기가 어려웠던 아이리쉬에게는 부드럽고 맛있었어요.  즐거운 발견이었다고 할까요. 흠.. 하지만 소주가 25유로 였다는것을 생각하면 당연히 무조건 맛있는게 당연하네요! 새로운 경험을 위해 꼭 가봐야하는 곳이에요. 식사하는 동안 고객을 위한 맞춤형 쇼를 하는데 북한 여종원들이 전통 한복을 입고 노래하고 춤는데요, 다 먹고 식당을 나설때에는 북한 음식에 대해 더 알기는 커녕 불룩 튀어나온 배를 볼 수 있을거에요.

 

지금 이 리뷰가 조금 덜 적극적이라고 느껴진다면 아마 그건 북한 식당에서 음식을 먹었다는 약간의 윤리적인 죄책감때문일거에요. 해당화는 유럽에서 첫 문을 연 북한 식당이지만 1990년대부터 아시아에 걸쳐 설립된 북한 정부 소유의 체인 식당입니다. 많은 전문가들이 이 식당에서 발생한 이익이 북한정부의 외화 창출에 기여한다고 생각하지요. 얼핏보기에 친절한 관광지처럼 보일지 모르지만, 이런 식당들은 고귀한 인권을 유린하는 악명높은 북한 정권을 지탱하는데 일말의 역할을 하게됩니다.

게다가, 고객들에게 미소지으며 지나치게 친절한 여종업원들을 보고 있자니 평양의 다른 체인 식당에서 일하는 종업원들 역시 작은 방에 함께 살며 서로를 감시하도록 강요당하고, 만에 하나 망명을 시도한다면 자신의 가족에게 어떤일이 일어날지 너무나도 잘 알고 있을 그들이 떠올라 우울하기도 했구요. 북한 정권에서 5,000마일이나 떨어져 있지만 여전히 갇혀지내는 생활을 하는

그들이 어떤 느낌일지 감히 상상할 수도 없네요.

 

한가지 바램이 있다면 해당화가 직접적으로 북한에 소유되어 있지 않고 (전문가들은 식당이 아마도 북한에 금융적인 보수를 지급해야 하는 조항이 있을거라고 하지만요) 제가 그곳에서 만난 종업원들이 너무나도 상냥했기 때문에 전문가들이 생각하는 것보다는 나은 상황이었으면 하네요. 

 

해당화의 종업원들이 북한에서 유럽으로 보낸 외교사절단인가요? 그리고 그들이 의심스러운 국가(북한)로부터의 다리 역할을 하고 평화와 서로 다른 문화를 이해하는데 기여하고 있나요? 아니면 우리는 그냥 천박하고 저속한 식당을 경험한 댓가로 돈을 지불하고 악명높은 독재자를 서포트하는 하나의 과정속에 포함되는건가요? 안타깝게도 해답은 평양소주 마시는 것보다 훨씬 어렵겠네요...

While in amsterdam we visited Haedongwha in Amsterdam, the first North Korean restaurant to open in Europe. It was quite an experience and the first time either of us ate North Korean fare or spoke with North Korean people.

 

The most noticeable difference in the food from its South Korean counterpart is that it was more sweet. Hmmm, besides that the fare can only be described as 'good' or average. The soju, supposedly directly imported from Pyongyang, was to those we've tasted in South Korea. It was smooth and delicious, especially for an Irishman who always had trouble finishing glasses of what sometimes taste like paint stripper. This was a pleasant surprise. Well it should have been good since a bottle of soju cost 25 euros! Really you come here for the experience. You listen to the waitresses sing and dance while dressed in traditional clothing in a show tailored for the customers, and then you leave with a full belly and not too much more knowledge regarding North Korean food.   

 

If this review feels a little unenthusiastic its because it's infused with some feelings of guilt around the ethics of eating here. While the Haedongwha restaurant is the first in Europe, it's part of a chain of Pyongyang eateries firmly established across Asia from the 1990's onwards and owned by the North Korean government. Many experts believe the profits from the restaurants are used to provide foreign currency for the regime. While it may appear as a benign tourist attraction, these restaurants play a role, albeit small, in propping up the North Korean regime, a regime infamous for its epic human rights abuses.

 

Plus, watching those waitresses smile and pander to patrons becomes depressing when you're reminded that in other Pyongyang chain restaurants they often are forced to live in single rooms together, forced to spy on each other and are probably well aware of the terrible consequences for their families if they try to defect. I can't imagine how it must feel to be 5000 miles from a regime like the one in North Korea yet feel so trapped.

 

My only hope is that since Haedongwha is not owned directly by the North Korean government (although experts believe they are probably obligated to provide some financial remuneration to the regime), that the conditions for the very friendly members of staff I met there are better than what experts seem to suggest.

 

Are these waitresses in Haedongwha the ambassadors to Europe of the North Korean people and culture, providing a bridge between suspicious nations and contributing to cultural understanding and peace? Or did we simply pay money to experience a kitschy themed restaurant and in the process provide support to a terrible dictatorship? Sadly, the answer is probably a lot less palatable than the Pyongyang soju.
