난민을 환영하는 유럽 / Welcome to Europe

지금 유럽에는 수십년동안 볼수 없었던 최대 규모의 난민들이 유입되고 있습니다. 대부분은 이라크와 시리아에서 탈출한 사람들인데, 이러한 난민 수십만명이 서유럽으로 흘러들어오고 있습니다. 안타까운 일들도 일어나고 있지만 (헝가리처럼 이러한 절망적인 난민들을 거부하는 나라들) 개인적으로는 자랑스럽게 생각합니다. 얼마전 해변에서 발견된 어린 아이의 시신이 담긴 사진 한장이 공개되었습니다. 그 어린이는 가족들과 함께 위험하고 낡은 보트를 타고 지중해를 건너다 익사했는데요. 이 사진 한장은 참혹한 난민의 실상을 알리며 많은 유럽인들을 눈물 흘리게 했고 많은 나라에서 그들을 위해 국경을 열자고 하는 캠페인으로 이어졌습니다. 정치는 물론 시리아의 난민에 대해 생각조차 해보지 않은 나의 페이스북 친구들도 난민들에게 자신들의 집은 열려있다고 말합니다. 또한 사람들은 어떻게 자신의 집으로 난민들을 받아들일수 있으며 어디로 음식과 옷을 기부할 수 있는지 묻습니다. 독일은 지금까지 10만명의 난민을 수용했으며 기차역에서는 일반 시민들이 난민들을 위해 노래를 부르고 어린이에게는 장난감과 과자를 주며 그들의 도착을 환영합니다.

이와는 반대로, 시리아나 이라크에 훨씬 가까이 있는 사우디아라비아, 카타르, 쿠웨이트같은 부유한 국가들은 도움이 절실한 난민들의 체류를 거부하면서 자신들의 부를 자랑하기에 바쁩니다. 사막에 인공 스키장을 짓거나 엄청나게 비싼 차를 구입하면서 말이죠. 그 돈으로 더 값진 변화를 만들수 있는 기회를 그냥 놓쳐버리는 것 같아 안타까울 따름입니다.

Europe is experiencing a refugee crisis on a scale not seen on the continent for decades. Mostly fleeing the conflicts in Iraq and Syria, hundreds of thousands of people are streaming into Western Europe. There’s a lot happening that I’m ashamed by (countries like Hungary mistreating these desperate people) but I’m proud too. A single photograph last week emerged of the body of a small child on a beach. He was travelling on a dangerous old boat with his family crossing the Mediterranean when he drowned. That single picture brought many Europeans to tears and started a campaign in many countries to open up their borders to refugees. My friends on Facebook who have never thought about politics or Syria or refugees are now opening up their homes to families. People are asking how they can allow families to live with them and where they can donate food and clothing. Germany has taken in 100,000s of people so far, and at train stations ordinary German people are greeting arriving refugees with songs and toys for children and snacks. 

On the other hand, wealthy countries much closer to Syria and Iraq, like Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait, are continuing to show off their money while refusing to allow any desperate refugees to stay there. They’re so proud of having so much money to spend on artificial ski resorts in the desert, and incredibly expensive cars. It’s a pity they’re missing a chance to really make a difference with that wealth.
