아이리쉬가 본 무한도전 하시마섬 / We must learn about history or we will repeat it

지난주 무한도전을 봤는데 계속 마음이 쓰이네요. 방송은 한국인들이 (청소년 나이) 세계2차대전 이전에 하시마섬의 광산에서 강제노역을 했던것에 관한 내용이었는데요,  그들은 보호장비도 없이 하루에 최고 16시간까지 일을 해야했습니다. 그리고 나중에 일본인들은 2차대전이 끝나자 모든 증거를 다 없애버려서 이제 우리는 누가, 정확히 얼마나 많은 한국인이 강제노역으로 죽었는지 알수 없게 되버렸습니다. 오늘날 하시마섬은 관광지가 되어 많은 일본인들이 이 섬을 찾고 있지만 (놀랍지도 않게) 강제노역을 당한 사람들에 대해서는 설명을 하지 않습니다. 대신, 관광객들에게 당시 일본이 얼마나 근대화가 되었는지 자부심을 일깨워주는 내용들로 가득합니다. 일본인들에게는 그 셀수 없이 많은 외국인들이 고통을 받으면서 자신의 나라 일본을 그만큼 ‘현대화, 근대화’ 시켜주었는지는 하나도 중요하지 않습니다.  그냥 편하게 역사를 ‘Disneyfied’ (중요한 사실을 왜곡/무시하고 디즈니처럼 상업적이고 이쁘게만 만들어버림) 시켜버립니다.

나는 아일랜드사람입니다. 그래서 영국이 우리 나라 아일랜드에 했던 이와 비슷한 잔혹한 일이나 사건들에 대해 많이 들으면서 자랐어요. 하지만 그와 동시에 영국 총리가 그들이 저질렀던 만행에 대해 깊게 사죄하는 것도 보았지요. 영국 사람들은 자신들이 식민지에게 했던 일들과 역사에서 배움을 얻었습니다. 독일 역시 자신들의 부끄러운 역사에 대해서 지속적으로 이야기 하고 다시는 그러한 과거 역사를 반복하지 않겠다고 말을 합니다. 그리고 프랑스도 자신들의 과거 역사에 대해 잘 알고 있고, 벨기에는 어떤가요. 그들도 자신들이 콩고에서 했던 과오로부터 배움을 얻었습니다. 이들 모두 자신들의 역사를 직시하고 인정하며 당시 저질렀던 범죄에 대해서 사죄합니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 어려서부터 역사를 사실 그대로 배우기 때문입니다. 나라가 이룩한 업적에 대해서는 자랑스러워하지만 동시에 그들의 어두운 역사에 대해서는 부끄러워합니다.  역사를 배우게 되면 과거의 실수를 다시 저지를 확률이 아주 낮아지고 교육은 평화와 정의를 지키기 위한 가장 중요한 방법입니다. 언젠가는  일본이 제가 말한 유럽의 다른 나라들처럼 자국의 국민들에게 진실되고 올바른  역사를 알려주어 학대받은 이웃국가들의 아픔에 진심으로 공감할 수 있는 날이 오기를 바랍니다.

Last week I watched Infinite Challenge and was deeply affected by it. Last night’s episode was about Korean men (children actually) forced to work in dangerous conditions in mines on Hashima during and before World War 2. They worked up to 16 hours a day with little protection or safety. The Japanese authorities destroyed all the evidence shortly after WW2 so we don’t know how many of people died in those mines. Today there are tours of the area for mostly Japanese visitors and (unsurprisingly) little mention is made of this virtual slavery. Instead, the visitors are encouraged to be proud of the achievements of Japan at this period and proud about how modern the nation became. Apparently it’s not important to mention the countless deaths and suffering of foreign people to make Japan so ‘modern’, just sit back and take pride in this ‘Disneyfied’ history.

I’m Irish so I grew up hearing about similar atrocities and crimes against my people by the British but I also saw the British Prime Minister give a deep apology for all their crimes. I see British people learn with shame about their history and what their country did to their colonies. The same with Germans who constantly talk about their history and vow never to allow themselves to repeat their past mistakes. The French also are very aware of their country’s history, along with Belgians who learn from an early age about Belgian crimes in the Congo. They are aware of their past and have accepted and apologized for their country’s crimes because they learn about their real history from a young age. They learn to be proud of their country’s achievements but are also shamed by their past misdeeds. Learning about history means you are less likely to repeat it. Education is the most important tool for peace and justice in the world. I really hope one day Japan educates its people about its history in the same way Europeans do and that they genuinely sympathise with their mistreated neighbours.
