Why do young people criticise their new home so much?

Today I came across the blog of an American student who started a master's degree course in Cork city in the south of Ireland but had such bad experiences that she left Ireland after only twelve days. She is actually quite a successful blogger and writer for several magazines so her opinion is valued by many people.... unfortunately. The problem is that she blames Ireland and Irish people for every little and big problem she encountered during her stay including how:

1. She couldn't find cafes or good coffee in the city.

2. She got lost on her first night in Ireland.

3. She signed up for a slightly different course than she had expected (this was surprisingly NOT her main complaint).

4. The streets were smaller than in America.

5. She couldn't make friends even though she used Facebook groups and dating websites!

6. There was graffiti on the buildings in the city.

7. One of the windows in her old lecture hall was broken.

8. The toilet seat was not affixed properly to the toilet.

These are the reasons why she dropped out of an expensive university course, that's it! With a little preparation she'd have had no problem with numbers 1, 2 and 3. With 4 she actually mentioned the smaller roads as being a problem, ignoring that her hometown in America is a planned city only 150 years old and Cork is celebrating its 1100th birthday this coming year! She expected Ireland, a rural country, and Cork, a tiny and ancient city, to be similar in layout to an American city. She even tried using dating apps to make friends but if she had of done some research she would have known this approach is not popular in Ireland. The last three reasons are the most interesting. She actually used demeaning language to describe how Irish people as lazy since she noticed a broken window in her university and how her toilet seat was loose. Likewise, graffiti is far more common in American cities than Irish ones from my own experience of living and travelling the United States but this was just another excuse for her to complain about Cork.

The fact is, the blogger suffered plain old, miserable homesickness. I've had this and it's not pleasant. It makes you feel every difference in a foreign country is bad; it makes you feel like a victim. It's a very sad situation for her and I'm glad she's happier now she's home. But she blames Irish people, our culture, our way of life, our cities, our streets, everything except mentioning how her opinions might be influenced by homesickness. Of course it's impossible to understand another culture enough to condemn it in just twelve days yet she manages to blame our Irish character and culture for a broken window and toilet seat.

I do have sympathy. When I first spent time in Korea I was excited but soon the positive feeling gave way to a sense of isolation. I wasn't sad but just... overwhelmed. Even with my partner I felt I had no way to make friends, no freedom to go to the shops alone, I was tired after the trouble of navigating a new and confusing public transportation system. Minor cultural differences, such as taking my shoes off or changing my trousers when visiting my wife's friends' home made me slightly less comfortable and left me feeling more exposed. I grew up in the countryside and in tiny villages and towns so being in Busan - a city that's bigger than my entire country - was a shock! I craved Irish food, my family and the ease of being surrounded by your own language.

Luckily it wasn't my first time living away from Ireland so I was prepared! I brought disks filled with my favourite Irish television shows, music and movies. I would Skype home regularly, but not too often. Once a week I would make bland but homely potato and meat dishes. I hiked Jangsan, visited Hadong county and spent time in the late evening sitting in quiet parks enjoying some inner peace. In time the new experiences and my growing comfort in beautiful Korea took up too much room for homesickness to exist. Any traveller reading this blog should know that homesickness can happen to anyone, no matter how well travelled they are and there's no shame in feeling sad for your comfortable life. The feeling will pass if you make an effort to enjoy and understand your new environment with an open-mind.

So the reason I believe this subject might be of interest on Tistory is that every year many foreign teachers and visitors leave Korea and post unfavourable views about the country. They spend a year or two in Korea, they won't speak the language or have any Korean friends but will still feel competent to diagnose all of the culture's problems! They'll talk about Confucianism and pretend like they know deeply about the culture. They'll criticise Korean food after spending a year eating Kimbab in the CU or around Westernised restaurants near Itaewon. If you look closely at all their negative stories, about being stared at in public, or shouted at for being loud on the subway, or not being able to make friends, the common thread is a deep homesickness and an expectation for Korea to be more similar to their own countries. When a country is too different from what they expected, these travellers collapse into feelings of fear and dislike. But the fact is, 80% of blogs, comments, videos, ad other media that criticise our countries say much more about the person who is criticising us than our countries themselves.

That's not to say there is not a lot to criticise in Ireland and Korea (for example, Korean peoples' heads are too big, and Irish men are possibly too handsome and intelligent). In all seriousness, we will in the future explore problems both our countries have. And we always, always, ALWAYS welcome honest comments so if you have an opinion, even very negative, always feel comfortable sharing it.

As always, this is a private blog so if you disagree, feel free to say so in the comments section! And I'll tell you why you're wrong :)
