아이리쉬는 다 술주정뱅이? / Are all Irish people drunks?

얼마전 아일랜드에서 온 영어 선생님 Katie Mulrennan에 대한 뉴스가 있었는데요. 그녀가 지원했던 서울의 한 학교에서 보낸 ‘술 마시는 습성’ 때문에 아일랜드 사람은 고용하지 않는다는 이메일이 화제였었죠. 재미있네요. 전문적으로 사람을 고용하는 사람이 그런 특정 단어를 썼다는 것이 재미있고 술을 엄청 많이 마시는 한국사람이 그런말을 했다는 것이 재미있어요. 아이리쉬 미디어를 비롯해 해외 미디어에서는 이 뉴스를 어이없이 웃긴 농담처럼 보도했는데요. Katie도 처음에는 그냥 웃고 넘겼지요. 노골적인 이 오래된 고정관념이 아직도 영향을 끼친다는 사실을 깨닫기전까지는요. 

 

한국과 마찬가지로, 아일랜드 역시 이웃 나라로부터 침략과 약탈을 당하는 큰 어려움을 겪었습니다.  영국이 아일랜드를 컨트롤하기 위해 사용한 작지만 아주 강력한 방법이 바로 아일랜드 문화를 우습게 만들고 조롱하는 것이었답니다.  교양넘치는 영국인들의 말에 따르면 아이리쉬는 미개하고, 멍청하고, 무식하고, 술주정뱅이이며, 게으르다고 합니다. 이 글을 읽는 한국인이라면 수세기 동안 일본이 취했던 행동들과 아주 흡사하다는 것을 알 수 있을거에요. 아일랜드는 세계에서 손꼽히는 훌륭한 문학가, 뛰어난 화가와 건축가들의 나라이며 학문에 대한 오래된 전통이 있는 나라이지만 영국인들은 아이리쉬들을 그냥 술주정뱅이 바보들로 만들어버림으로써 정치적 통제를 쉽게 정당화시켜버렸지요. 바로 이것이 ‘술주정뱅이 아이리쉬들’ 이라는 미신같은 말이 나온 배경인데요. 그냥 단순히 농담으로 치부하기에는 좀 아닌것 같죠?

이러한 고정관념은 잠재적으로 한국을 방문할 아이리쉬 관광객들, (아이리쉬는 술주정뱅이라는) 미신을 믿는 한국인들, 좋은 영어선생님들이 꼭 필요한 한국의 교육 시스템을 포함해 모두에게 좋을 것이 없다고 생각해요. 이 뉴스는  아이리쉬 포럼에서 조금 핫한 주제였었는데 한국에서 영어를 가르칠 계획을 세웠던 일부 아이리쉬들은 이제는 다른 나라를 고려한다고 하네요.  개인적으로, 고용하지 않는다는 메일을 쓴 사람 만나보고 싶네요. 그 이상한 이메일을 쓸 때 무슨 생각을 했는지 전 세계가 볼수 있도록 ‘보내기’ 버튼을 눌러버린 그 사람을요!

 

오해하지 마세요. 아일랜드 사람들은 펍을 사랑합니다. 저 역시 펍을 좋아하고 이제 제 와이프 역시 펍을 좋아합니다. 아일랜드에서 차 한잔, 아니면 국민 술 기네스를 마시며 몇 시간 동안 조용하고 분위기 있는 펍에서 책을 읽는 것은 아주 흔한 일입니다. 펍에서 친구들을 만나기도 하고 모르는 사람들과 오래된 친구처럼 이야기를 나누기도 하며 즉흥 음악 연주를 듣거나 아니면 그냥 TV 스포츠 중계를 보기도 합니다. 제가 제일 좋아하는 펍 중에 하나는 아이리쉬 작가 ‘제임스 조이스’와 관련있는 멀리간스 펍(Mulligan's Pub)인데요, 한 겨울 늦은 오후, 아일랜드의 필연적이고 피할수 없는 비를 맞은 후 벽난로 옆에 앉아 젖은 옷을 말리며 책을 읽곤 했었지요. 언젠가 더블린을 방문하실 계획이시라면, 연락주세요. 관심을 갖고 계신 그 어떤 것이 있다면 아는 한도 내에서 많이 추천해 드릴께요!

A recent news story that has been making the rounds centred on an English language teacher from Ireland, Katie Mulrennan, and how she received  a rejection letter from a Seoul school informing her they did not hire Irish people because of their “alcoholism nature”. Now this is funny. It's funny that a professional would write that in such specific terms, and it's funny that someone from Korea, with its massive predisposition towards hard alcohol, would write this! The Irish media first, and then the international media covered the story as a joke topic and poked fun at the ridiculousness of it all. Katie herself spoke about how at first she found it funny too until she realised how damaging such blatant and lazy stereotyping can be.

 

Just like Korea, the Irish have faced a larger, more aggressive neighbour for centuries who had a tendency to invade and pillage and steal from us. One of the most subtle but powerful ways the British managed to control Ireland was by ridiculing our culture. The Irish were savages, were dumb, were ignorant, were drunks, were lazy, according to the civilised British. This might be familiar to Korean readers who know how Japan had similar ideas about their culture for centuries. Anyway, Ireland has had some of the best writers in the world, amazingly talented painters and architects and a big tradition of scholarship but by making us look like drunken fools, the British found it easier to legitimise their political control over us. This is where the 'drunken Irishman' myth started. So it's not always a harmless joke.

 

These stereotypes hurt all people involved, including potential Irish visitors to Korea, the Koreans who believe the myths and the education system in Korea that is crying out for good English teachers. It also became quite a popular subject on Irish social media forums in which people who had been planning to teach in Korea were now considering other options. I would love to meet this individual who wrote that rejection message to see just what they were thinking as they typed up that very odd message and pressed 'send' for the whole world to see!

 

Anyway, not to be contradictory, Irish people do love pubs! I love to visit pubs and my wife enjoys this now too. It's common in Ireland to take a book and sit in a quiet, atmospheric pub for hours enjoying a pot of tea or a Guinness, our national alcoholic drink. We can meet friends there, chat with strangers like they're old companions, listen to impromptu musical performances or simply watch a sports event on the television. One of my favourite local pubs is one associated with the Irish writer James Joyce called Mulligan's Pub. I would go there on a Winter's late afternoon, sit by the fireplace, drying myself after the inevitable and unavoidable Irish rain, and read.
