K pop 말고 다른걸 보여줘요! / There's much more than K Pop to Korea!

음, 지금 앉아서 아리랑 TV 를 보고 있어요. 아리랑 TV 웹사이트에 따르면 이 채널은 전세계에 24시간 방송되는 채널로 시청자들에게 ‘현대적이고 정확한 한국, 아시아 나아가 세계’를 보여주기 위해 디자인 되었다고 하네요.

 

그런데요, 이 채널은 한국의 문화를 외국인들에게 홍보하는 것을 목표로 한다고 하는데 , 제가 시청한 바에 의하면 K-POP 뮤직 쇼, 한국 드라마, 삼성이나 현대 관련 경제 뉴스 그리고 엄청나게 잘생키고 키큰 백인이 한국 이곳저곳을 여행하는 그럴듯한 광고들만 계속 보여주네요. 모두 프로페셔널하고 재미있지만 제가 생각하기에는 개선하기에 따라 훨씬 더 나은 포맷이 될수 있을것 같아요!

 

아일랜드도 다를것 없어요. 아일랜드는 좋은 문화, 아름다운 자연환경과 흥미로운 역사를 충분히 가지고 있는데 아일랜드 관광 홍보 비디오에는 끔찍한 팝 밴드가 나오거나 아니면 유명하고 그냥 잘생긴 사람이 나와서 손을 흔들며 카메라를 향해 미소를 짓죠.

수군옷을 입혀놓으니 진짜 수군인줄..

제가 만약 한국의 문화를 세계에 홍보할수 있는TV 채널을 소유하고  있다면 저는 이런걸 하고 싶어요:

1. 아리랑에서 잠깐 잠깐 한국의 자연환경, 독도, 제주도, 그 밖의 지역을 보여주고 있지만 우리는 더 보고싶어요! 제가 아리랑 채널에서 본 자연에 관한 것이라면 노량진 수산시장에서 두 모델이 문어를 들고 있다거나 중간에 잠깐 보여주는 짧은 자연 풍경들이 전부에요. 한국의 멸종위기에 처한 동물 보호와 관련된 것이나 아름다운 한국 시골 풍경들, 산, 호수, 해안선을 담은 영상을 만들면 어떨까요?

2. 한국을 방문한 관광객이 제주도 구석구석을 여행하는 내용은 어떤가요? 한국의 시골에서 어떠한 경험을 할수 있는지 보여줄거에요! 한국에서 하이킹하는 흥미진진한 주말 프로그램은 어떤가요? 외국인들이 엄청 좋아할거에요!

3.  K-POP은 일부 외국인들에게 어필할수 있지만 한국의 전통 음악과 예술에 관련한 내용은 언제나 환영이에요. 관광객과 한국사람들이 한국 악기를 배우는 것을 시청하고 싶지 않나요? 아니면 전통 축제에 관한 프로그램도 좋죠! 외국인들은 ‘진짜’ 진정한 한국을 보고싶어해요!

4. 경제 뉴스는 아주 중요하지만 일부 프로그램은 좀 더 깊은 이야기를 들려줄수 있을 것 같아요. 예를들어 삼성에서 일하는 근로자들의 삶을 보여주거나, 누가 , 어디서 어떤 기업을 시작했는지 그리고 어떻게 세계에서 그렇게 막강해질 수 있었는지 한국의 기업들의 역사에 등에 대해서 보여줄수도 있죠.

5. 마지막으로, 저는 전문가들, 팬들, 일반 한국사람들이 자신들의 역사와 문화의 어떤부분이 중요한지에 대해 이야기하는 프로그램을 만들거에요. 외국인들에게 홍길동과 소나기가 얼마나 아름다운 소설인지 거북선이 얼마나 흥미롭게 생겼는지 들려주고 싶어요.

잘 모르겠어요.  좀 가식적이고 따분한가요?

에이레에게 물어봐야겠네요 .만약 위 프로그램들이 생긴다면 볼건지 안볼건지..

Well, I'm sitting watching Arirang TV on French television right now. Arirang is a 24 hour station broadcast around the world and is “designed to give viewers a contemporary, accurate look at Korea, Asia and the world” according to its website.

 

Here's the thing. This station aims to promote Korean culture to foreigners yet from the hours and days I've watched it, it seems to only show K Pop music, K dramas, economic news about Samsung and Hyundai and constant glossy advertisements depicting impossibly handsome white skinned, tall people tourists going around Korea. There are a handful of more interesting programmes but mainly it's what I mentioned. The presenters seem professional and funny but the format could be so much better!

 

Ireland does something similar. We have a wonderful culture, nature and history but instead make tourist videos showing Irish terrible pop bands or famous, good looking Irish people waving and smiling at the camera.

 

Okay, so if I owned a television station to promote Korean culture abroad, I would do the follow:

1. Arirang shows some short bits about nature, Dokdo Island, Jeju Island and other places but we want more! The only nature I've seen on Arirang was an octopus being lifted up by two models at Noryangin market or a few short intermissions showing landscapes. Let's have hours devoted to the animals of Korea, protecting endangered species, views of the stunning Korean countryside, video of mountains, lakes and coastline!

2. How about watching tourists come to Korea and travelling around Jeju Island? Let's show what people can experience in rural Korea. How about a fun weekly programme just about hiking in Korea? Foreigners would love that.

3. K Pop appeals to some foreign people but there's always space for traditional Korean music and art. Let's watch tourists and locals learn musical instruments. Or programmes about traditional festivals! Foreigners want to see the 'real', authentic Korea!

4. Economic news is very important but maybe some programmes can go in-depth about the lives of workers at Samsung, or the history of Korean companies, who started them, where they came from and how they became so powerful in the world.

5. Last but not least, I would have experts, fans and ordinary Koreans talk about what parts of history and culture are important to them. I want foreign people to hear how beautiful the novels Sonagi and Hong Gildong are, or how fascinating turtle ships look.

 

I don't know, maybe I'm pretentious and boring. I'll ask Eire if she'd watch my television station...
