[아일랜드] 6가지 더블린 및 근교 추천 여행 / six things to do in and around Dublin on a budget.

 

아일랜드는 물가가 비싼 나라이고 더블린은 아일랜드에서 가장 물가가 비싼 곳입니다. 하지만, 조금만 사전조사를 하고 오는 여행자들이라면 큰 돈을 쓰지 않고 더블린을 둘러볼 수 있어요. 제가 몇 가지 추천해 볼께요.

 

  

1. 교외지역 둘러보기

더블린 마운틴은 더블린 시티에서 8km 내에 위치해 있어요. 더블린 남부에서 라스판햄으로 조금만 버스를 타고 가면 아일랜드에서도 손꼽히는 아름다운 산과 자연 경관을 마주할 수 있어요.

몇 시간 도보 여행을 해 보세요. 아니면 텐트나 하이킹 장비, 자전거를 가져가서고대 습지, 고대 수도원이랑 거대한 호수를 찾아가며 위클로우 트레킹 코스를 여행해도 좋아요. (더블린-라스판햄 왕복 버스비 : 7유로 이내)

 

 

2. 로컬 펍에서 시간보내기

더블린에 있는 700개의 펍 대부분은 조용하고, 친절하며 아늑하답니다. (템플바 비추!) 800년 이상 된 오래된 펍 브레이즌 헤드(The Brazen Head)를 가거나(관광객 있을수 있음), 1746년 마녀로 몰려 화형당한 한 여자의 이름을 딴 달키 켈리 펍(Darkey Kelly's Pub)을 가세요. 코블스톤 펍(The Cobblestone Pub)같은 많은 펍에서 전통 아이리쉬 음악을 매일 저녁 라이브로 들을수도 있어요. 꼭 술을 마실 필요는 없답니다. 2유로짜리 차나 커피 한잔을 주문하고 자리에 앉아 분위기를 만끽하며 가지고 간 책을 읽으면서 점심이나 근무 후 휴식을 취하러 오는 현지 아이리쉬들에게 ‘Hello’ 해 보세요

 

 

 

3. 그냥 걸으세요!

더블린은 ‘도시’라고 불리기는 하지만 현지 사람들은 그보다 더블린 ‘마을’이라고 합니다. 그 만큼 작다는 말이겠죠. 더블린 제일 동쪽 끝에서부터 시작해서 거대한 피닉스 공원이 나올 때까지 리피강을 따라 쭉 서쪽으로 걸으세요. 

복원된 19세기 배도 볼수 있고 신고전주의 양식으로 지어진 건물이나 바이킹 및 흥미로운 다른 볼거리들도 볼수 있답니다. 천천히 걸어도 1시간이면 충분할거에요. 공원에서 간단한 피크닉을 하거나, 잔디밭에 누워 태양을 즐길수도 있고, 자전거를 빌려 돌아다니다 운이 좋으면 사슴을 만날 수도 있어요!

 

 

4. 박물관 및 역사적인 장소들

더블린에는 자랑스러운 전통이 있는데요. 박물관이 무료라는 거에요(전부다는 아니에요).  아트 박물관, 아트 히스토리 박물관, 아일랜드 역사박물관, 밀리터리 역사박물관, 자연사 박물관 등 다양한 주제의 박물관이 있어요. 또 트리니티 칼리지 내부, 체스터 비티 도서관도 무료로 입장할수 있답니다. 제가 사람들에게 더블린을 안내해 줄때는 항상  성 미샨 교회(St. Michan's Church) 에 데리고 갑니다 (미칸보다는 미샨에 더 가까운 발음이에요) 800년 된 미라의 발을 만져볼수 있어요! (입장료 약 6 유로이며 아이들과 어른들 모두 좋아해요) 

(에이레 : 저도 여기 두번 다녀왔어요. 성 미샨 교회가 특별한 이유는 지하 납골당을 볼 수 있기 때문이에요. 교회에 계신 분이 함께 지하실로 가서 각각의 미라가 어떻게 죽었는지 이 납골당에 어떠한 역사가 있는지 영어로 설명해 주는데 너무 이야기를 재미있게 하시는 분이라 입장료가 전혀 아깝지 않아요!)

 

트리니티 칼리지 도서관

5. 더블린 트리니티 칼리지, 북 오브 켈스

트리니티 칼리지 도서관에 있는 아름다운 고대 책, 북 오브 켈스(Book of Kells manuscript)를 보려면 입장료 10유로를 내야 합니다. 다시 말하면 트리니티 학생들에게는 무료라는 말이죠! 그리고 동행자 한 명 역시 무료로 데려갈 수 있어요. 만약 트리니티 칼리지를 구경하다가 부탁을 들어줄 것 같은 좋은 학생을 만난다면, 무료로 도서관에 들어가서 북 오브 켈스를 볼 수 있을지도 몰라요. 부탁해 본다고 손해 볼 건 없을 테니, 잘 하면 현지인을 사귀는 기회가 될수도 있겠지요? 

6. 더블린 사진찍기 좋은 장소

-무어 스트리트에는 과일과 야채 노점들이 많이 있는데요, 이 노점들은 더블린 예전 그대로의 모습을 간직하고 있어서 진짜 더블린을 찍기에는 아주 좋은 장소에요. (물론 싸고 신선한 과일을 사기도 좋은 곳이구요!)

-스테판스 그린 쇼핑 센터 꼭대기 주차장은 더블린 시내를 한눈에 보기 좋은 장소에요. 더블린에는 전망을 볼 수 있는 고층건물이 없는데요 (16층이 최대) 이 주차장은 도시 전망 사진을 찍을 수 있는 가장 좋은 장소랍니다. 공공 건물이 아니므로 경비원에게 반드시 양해 및 허가를 받으셔야 해요! (전망을 볼 수 있는 또 다른 장소는 기네스 스토어하우스(Guinness Storehouse)인데요. 360도 전망을 볼 수 있는 대신 입장료 16유로를 내야 합니다)

 

- 위 내용들이 더블린의 전부는 아니고… 성(castles)들이 아직 남았죠! 전문가들에 따르면 아일랜드에는 약 7000개의 크고 작은 성이 있는데 아일랜드에서 운전하거나 여행할 때 성을 한 번도 지나치지 않을 가능성은 거의 제로에 가깝습니다. 아일랜드의 성에는 슬픈 아일랜드의 역사가 그대로 녹아 있답니다.

 

Ireland is an expensive country, and Dublin is the most expensive in the country. Thankfully, the tourist who does some research can still explore Dublin and experience the best without spending outrageous money. Here's some of my ideas:

1. A Trip to the countryside. 

Dublin city is less than five miles (8 km) from the beautiful Dublin Mountains. A quick bus to Rathfarnham in the south will allow you to walk over mountains and across some of the most stunning scenery Ireland has to offer. Go for a couple of hours, or you could take a tent, some hiking gear and hike or bike along the Wicklow Way trail for five days, visiting ancient bogs, ancient monasteries and huge lakes. Getting to Rathfarnham and back to the city will cost you less than 7 euros in total. 

2. Relax in a local pub.

Most of the 700 pubs in Dublin are quiet, friendly and cosy (avoid Temple Bar pubs where possible!). You can visit The Brazen Head, a supposedly over 800 year old pub (a bit touristy), or the quiet and atmospheric Darkey Kelly's Pub, named after a woman who was burned for witchcraft in 1746. Many of these pubs, such as The Cobblestone Pub, have live traditional music every evening. You don't have to drink - bring a book with you, buy a cup of tea or coffee for two euros and sit and enjoy the atmosphere and say hello to the locals as they come in after work or for lunch.  

3. Walk!

While it's called a city, the locals use 'Dublin town' instead because it's so compact. Walk to the east end of the town, then walk west, hugging the Liffey River until you reach the absolutely massive Phoenix Park. You'll see restored 19th century ships, neo-classical architecture, Viking structures and many other interesting sights along the way. This will take less than an hour's slow walk. There, you can have a picnic, lay in the sun on the grass, or rent some bikes for an hour and, if lucky, see some deer along your way!

4. Museums and historical sites.

Dublin has a proud tradition of free museums. We have museums covering art, art history, our nation's history, military history, natural history and many other subjects. We also have sites to wander around for free such as the beautiful grounds of Trinity College, Dublin and Chester Beatty Library. Whenever I show people Dublin, I take them on a tour of the crypts of St. Michan's Church where visitors are encouraged to touch the toe of an 800 year old mummy! It's costs about 6 euros but is always a favourite of children and adults alike.

5. Trinity College, Dublin and the Book of Kells.

It will cost you 10 euros to view the ancient, beautiful Book of Kells manuscript and Library at Trinity College, Dublin. On the other hand, students of the university have free admission and can take one other person for free. If you meet a Trinity College student while walking around the grounds and feel confident to ask them, they may let you enter the library and Book of Kells for free. There is no harm in asking and could be a way to meet the locals!

6. Favourite spots for photographing Dublin.

- There is a large collection of fruit and vegetable stalls put up every day on Moore Street. It's a quinntessential Dublin tradition and one that provides fascinating photo opportunities of real Dublin life (and a chance to buy fresh, cheap food!).

 

- The top floor of the carpark in St. Stephen's Green Shopping Centre provides a clear view of all of Dublin city. Dublin doesn't have skyscrapers (our tallest building is only 16 floors) and so this high carpark gives an ideal view for city-scape photography. It's a private building so make sure to ask permission from security guards! The other option is the Guinness Storehouse which provides 360 degree views of the city however cost 16 euros to visit.)

- Ok, this is not only about Dublin but... castles! According to some experts, Ireland has had up to 7000 castles, big and small, in it's turbulent past. You can barely drive or travel for a few miles without seeing some small castle. They always provide a powerful view of Ireland's sad history.
