Two cultures fall in love

St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin

(I have spread my dreams under your feet; tread softly because you tread on my dreams.)”.

St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin

I gave Eire a book on our second date, right before kissing her. I gave her a copy of Dubliners, by Jame Joyce's which I carried around everywhere in a little pocket I had sewed into the inside of my jacket. It was raining very softly while we strolled through the gardens of St. Patrick's Cathedral. I felt it was a perfect gift for a perfect moment. I chose that novel because it describes Dublin not in a physical sense, it's not about buildings or people but about an atmosphere. Dublin as a spiritual, ephemeral place. I hoped Eire would see beyond the physical side of Dublin, the rain and the cars and people and feel the unique atmosphere I felt, and Joyce wrote about 100 years before.

A few dates later we sat in a pub chatting over coffee. She sipped her drink and looked up at me with the most adorable foam on her nose! I suddenly felt more nervous in her company than I ever had been up to then. I was even more unsettled than when I first met her. It took me a moment to realise I was feeling worried at how strong my feelings were for this special woman. Being an Irishman, of course I didn't want to be so exposed as to tell her how I felt! Instead I took my pen and held her arm and wrote part of a line from one of my favourite poems, “I have spread my dreams under your feet; tread softly because you tread on my dreams.” W. B. Yeats poem 'The Cloths of Heaven' describes how vulnerable we become to another person when we finally realise they have captured our love, something I felt for the first time in my life as Eire sat looking at me with a foamed nose and a ink blotted arm!

Since this blog is anonymous I can admit this... I've written Eire some poetry, some very bad poetry! I have a good excuse though. It was my attempt to write my first sentences in Korean. We were sitting in a cafe in Seoul and I wanted to apologise to her for not studying Korean enough. I don't study every day. Sometimes I don't study even every week. It's an embarrassment and on this occasion after making the same silly mistake with my particles, oel and reol, I decided to apologise with a short poem showing I am actually trying hard. The poem was short but written like an Irish traditional song, its theme was life and death and the structure was repetitive. I handed it to her in a cafe in Seoul one day and we both realised, despite the poem being absolutely terrible, that it was a sign our cultures were coming together as we became closer.

A few months later we were taking a stroll through the countryside. It was a sunny, warm Irish day near our old house when then the 'heavens opened up', an Irish expression meaning it began to heavily rain. We ran to a little wendy house near a small pond and sat shivering there in our wet clothing. I turned to Eire and smiled and said, it's a “sonagi, like with the children who fall in love!” We talked about that work, how beautiful and sad the story was and Eire taught me about other Korean stories and poems while we waited for the sun to come back out. We were sharing each other's culture in our every day lives and it meant we were understanding and appreciating each other because of that.

While you should see each other as unique and not only representatives of your heritage, if you are in an inter-cultural relationship, then learn everything you can about your partner's culture! Read their favourite books, watch their television, listen to their country's terrible pop music, try to understand their comedy. Like with Eire and I, two things will happen: firstly you'll learn more deeply about the feelings and mind of your loved one, and secondly, you'll gain a whole new vocabulary and language for you both to communicate your feelings and ideas through. Now you finally have an excuse to listen to Girls Generation and to watch Colin Farrell movies...
