나의 모국어, 아일랜드어 (게일어) / My native language

(It was good craic at dinner last night)" 아일랜드 사람들은 이 단어를 쓸때,  좋은 친구들, 다함께 느끼는 즐거움, 좋은 사람들과 어울리며 보내는 재미있고 좋은 시간을 떠올리죠. 재미있는 것이 이 단어는 20세기 중반 영어 단어로써 아일랜드에 처음 소개되었는데 이제는 다시 아일랜드어로써 영어에 영향을 미친 단어로 역으로 소개되고 있네요! 만약 여러분이 아일랜드 사람을 만나서 이 단어를 쓴다면 사람들이 굉장히 기뻐할거에요!

마지막 보너스!

An bhfuil céad agam dul amach go dtí an leithreas más é do thoil é

아일랜드 사람이라면 모두 알고 있는 문장이에요. 아일랜드 사람 아무에게 이 말을 읽어보라고 하면 모두 다 읽을줄 알거에요. 이 문장은 학교를 다니기 시작하는 5살부터 학교에서 배우게 되는데요, 배우지 않으면 화장실에 갈 수 없기 때문이에요... 이 문장 뜻은... 바로....

"저 화장실 가도 되나요 (can I please use the bathroom)?

This post is about Irish words used in English.

Irish, or Gaelic as it is officially called, is a language spoken fluently by only a small percentage of Irish people today. It is a very ancient language and is completely different from English, a completely separate language! The English State tried to suppress the language in many different ways but it survived. Until the 1800s a majority of Irish people spoke Irish but then tragedy struck; a massive famine hit Ireland starting in 1844 and it killed more than a million people and sent possibly two million out of the country. Ireland's population halved in the coming decades and the majority of Irish speakers who lived in the west of Ireland were affected. The number of speakers of Irish declined until we gained some independence from Britain in the 1920s. Now, every child learns Irish at school, all Irish people have some knowledge of the language and in small areas of the west of the country people use Irish for everyday purposes. Irish is surviving!

It also has had a strong influence on the English language. Many English words come from or were inspired by Irish. For example:

Whiskey

This word comes from the Irish words, 'uisge beatha', meaning 'water of life'. 'Uisge beatha' was changed to make it sound more English-sounding and English-looking, hence 'Whiskey'. The first ever mention of 'whiskey / water of life' in Ireland, ironically, was when a local chieftain died after drinking too much...

By the way, Whiskey and Whisky are simply different regional variations very simply put, you should use 'whiskey' with an 'e' in Ireland and America, and 'Whisky' without an 'e' in Scotland.

Trousers

The Irish used the term 'triubhas' meaning a  pair of long shorts that was regarded as exotic clothing by the English. It is common to use 'pants' by Americans but that means underwear in most other English speaking countries!

Galore

Galore is an adjective meaning plenty, or of abundance. It's common in all English speaking countries. For example, you'll find soju galore in Korean restuarants!

Lough

A lough is simply a lake. Because it's an Irish word, 'lough' makes people think of more beautiful, rural, remote landscapes and beautiful scenery. If you use 'lough' rather than 'lake' in English it will be more expressive!

Craic

Craic is a noun meaning fun and excitement you have with friends. So I'll say, It was good craic at dinner last night. When an Irish person uses it, it makes them think of friends, fun together and socialising with good people. It's interesting because it's actually an English word that was adopted into Irish in the mid 20th century but now has re-entered the English language as an Irish word! If you use this word when you meet an Irish person, they'll be very pleased!

Okay, one last bonus phrase:

An bhfuil céad agam dul amach go dtí an leithreas más é do thoil é

Every Irish person knows this. Ask any Irish person to say something in Irish, and they'll say this. We need to learn it from age 5 in school. We can't use the bathroom otherwise... it means, can I please use the bathroom!
