A life less ordinary (and less warm)

We're always posting photographs of fancy food and beautiful locations because, well, we're a very wealthy and sophisticated couple... Okay, that's a huge lie. We're poor and when we do get to experience wonderful food and places, we're incredibly grateful! You see we've chosen a new lifestyle; we don't work as hard now and money is less important to us than in the past. We've never been happier!

Unfortunately choosing a different lifestyle can be difficult. One example is the 400 year old country house we previously lived in. The first day we moved in we found so many problems but we didn't have a lot of money so we knew we were staying here for a long time. We had no heating, no hot water, the furniture was old and smelled, the house was damp and we had mice and insects in the house! It was late Summer and that evening we made some coffee, sat outside on the deck and watched the sun set as we both silently panicked about our new life.

It took months to turn this crumbling house into a happy home. We had a routine: we'd wake early in the morning and light the fire, make some coffee, clean the house, take a walk to the town or around the forest beside our home and back to work until the early evening. At night we would sit in front of the fireplace reading, cooking and talking. We began to enjoy this life.

The Winter was tough. On particularly cold nights we would cover ourselves in blankets and drink hot chocolate. It was the most atmospheric place on Earth on those stormy nights when the electricity failed and we would cuddle while listening to the wind and rain batter the walls. We sometimes wondered if there was a couple sitting listening to the wind and rain hundreds of years before us – we felt part of history.

When the weather was cold it usually meant the night sky would be clear and beautiful. We would go outside in a sleeping blanket and look at the Milky Way, spot shooting stars and I would teach Eire the names of the constellations.

The night's were pitch black and completely silent and this meant we slept better than we ever have in our lives.

I would sometimes jog to town and then carry a week's food and produce home in my hiking bag. At first I listened to podcasts or music but eventually I switched these off and simply absorbed the environment around me. The road was so quiet, peaceful and beautiful that it felt almost like meditation to walk it.

We would cook food with berries, we made blackberry jam and I loved nettle soup and tea – all ingredients gathered in our garden! We would sit on our deck in the warm summer evenings and eat while listening to the wind gently blowing through the trees.

This period of our life was so important because we learned about ourselves, our limits and what is important to us. We might enjoy hot showers every day but we know we can be happy when the water is cold, or we are inside a cottage with no electricity during a storm, or we need to spend an hour chopping wood every morning just to warm our home! We could have chosen to live in a normal apartment in a comfortable city but thankfully we chose to take a risk. Now a little dream I have is to live in a small traditional Korean house in the countryside so maybe one day I'll write a blog entitled, “An Irish rice farmer in Hadong!”
