아이리쉬 눈으로 본 땅콩 회항 그리고 재벌 / An Irishman's view on macadamia nuts and chaebols...

유감스럽게도 이제 조현아라는 이름을 모르는 사람은 없겠지요? 몇 주 전 대한한공 회장의 딸 조현아씨가 땅콩을 봉지째로 서비스한 기내 직원을 학대한 소식이 온갖 헤드라인을 장식하고 있습니다. 이 논란은 외국인들에는 한낱 웃음거리였지만 한국의 많은 사람들에게는 분노를 자아내게 했지요. (땅콩을 봉지째 서비스해서가 아니라 조씨의 행동때문에요!)

영어에서, 'nuts'는 완전히, 전적으로, 완벽하게 정신이 나갔다는 뜻으로도 쓰이는데요. 아일랜드 신문과 인터넷에서는 이를 이용한 헤드라인 기사가 많이 나왔답니다. 예를 들어: 

"미쳤어요 (Are you nuts)?" 대한항공 승무원  잘못된 방법으로 간식 제공하여 쫓겨나다

땅콩 회항 이슈로 창의적이고 재미있는 말장난이 진짜 엄청 많이 나왔어요. 저도 한 개 만들어 볼수 있겠지만 하지 않을께요. (류는 여기서 '않겠다'는 뜻으로 'not'대신 'nut'을 썼는데요, 한국말로 어떻게 자연스럽게 표현해야 할지 모르겠네요. 혹시 좋은 아이디어 있으신 분 알려주세요!)

아무튼, 첫날 몇몇 기사가 등장한 이후로 그날 비행기에서 조씨가 승무원에게 얼마나 심하게 대했는지 세부적인 이야기들이 나오기 시작했지요. 승무원들에게 무릎을 꿇고 엎드리다시피 머리를 숙이게 하고 잡지를 돌돌 말아 툭툭쳤으며 거기다 모자라 이 논란으로 인한 여파를 줄여보고자 항공사 주도로 거짓말 및 조작을 시도하구요. 어이없이 웃음이 터져나오는 이 논란은 해외 미디어에 의해 재빠르게 심각한 뉴스로 바뀌게 됩니다. 

아일랜드 및 해외에서 이 사건은 한국 사회내 권력을 가진 부자들에 대한 심각한 이야기로 전환되었습니다. 일반적으로 해외에서는 한국을 잘 알지는 못하지만 긍정적으로 생각하고 있어요. (지금까지 제가 만난 한국인들이 아일랜드가 어디 있는, 어떤 나라인지 모르는 것처럼이요!) 한국은 부유하고 민주적이고, 좋은 뮤지션과 영화, 아름다운 자연환경을 가진 나라라고 알고 있습니다. 하지만 불행하게도, 많은 아이리쉬 사람들은 이 사건과 대한항공의 처신을 뉴스로 접하며 한국을 처음 알게 되고 한국에는 엄청남 권력을 가지고 이를 거리낌없이 남용하는 부유한 사람들이 있다고 생각하게 됩니다. 

아일랜드 인터넷 대부분의 글, 기사 및 TV 논평은 조씨와 그와 같은 계층의 사람들을 상대해야만 하는 근로자들에 대해 안타까워합니다. '재벌'은 하나의 상징적인 단어가 되었고 이번 논란은 아일랜드 사람들로 하여금 아일랜드의 부유층에 대해 토론하게 하고 이들이 사회에서 너무 많은 권력을 가진 것은 아닌지 생각하게 합니다.

이번 대한한공 논란으로 인한 좋은 점이 있다면 한국인들이 한국사회의 '재벌'의 위치에 대해 생각하게 하는 계기가 되었고, 아일랜드 사람들은 다시 한번 5000마일 멀리 떨어진 이웃나라가 얼마나 자신과 닮은 점이 많은지 깨닫게 되었답니다.

By now you probably all know the name of Cho Hyun-ah. Sadly. Daughter of the chairman of Korean Air, Cho hit the headlines several weeks ago when she verbally abused some staff members over an unopened bag of nuts. It caused outrage in Korea, (not the unopened bag of nuts but her behaviour!) while giving us non-Koreans some giggles.

In the English language, 'nuts' also means being completely, utterly, totally crazy! So of course Irish newspapers and internet commentators couldn't resist using headlines such as: 

"Are you nuts?" Korean Air crew member removed for serving snack the wrong way

 Many, many other creative puns were created in covering this story. I could make a pun myself but I'm nut going to do that.  

Anyway, after the first few stories emerged on the first day, details began to come out about how badly she had treated the staff on that plane. Tales of people kneeling with heads bowed down, being prodded by her rolled up magazine like naughty dogs, and then lies and manipulation by the Airline itself as it tried to limit the fallout from this incident. The humourous take by the Western media quickly changed to a more serious tone.

The news story in Ireland and across the West turned into a serious discussion on the role wealth and power plays in South Korean society. Generally we have a vague but positive sense of South Korea (much like all the Koreans I've met who have no clue where, and sometimes what Ireland is!). We know Korea is wealthy, democratic and modern with many good musicians, movies and wonderful landscapes. Unfortunately what a lot of Irish people learned for the first time from this incident and the subsequent behaviour of Korean Airlines is that there are some wealthy people in Korea who have a lot of power and are not afraid to use it. 

The vast majority of Irish internet posts, articles and television commentary has been sympathetic to the workers who have to deal with Cho and her class. The word 'chaebol' is coming into our lexicon and this story has made us start to discuss our own wealthy class and how they may have too much power in our society. 

So I guess the good news from this incident on the Korean Airlines is that Koreans are discussing what place in society 'chaebols' should have. And yet again Irish people have been reminded how much in common we have with our 5000 miles distant neighbours!
